#DetentionDebate tomorrow at Westminster
Tomorrow, 14 March, there will be a debate about the detention of vulnerable people in Westminster Hall between 2.30pm and 4pm. The debate is being led by Anne McLaughlin MP and will ‘raise the Shaw Review and progress since its publication last year’.
In January 2016, the Government made a commitment to Parliament to ‘safeguard the most vulnerable’, with a ‘clear presumption that people who are at risk should not be detained’. But more than one year on, we continue to see vulnerable people held in detention on a daily basis.
There is little evidence that the Home Office’s new policy on Adults at Risk has marked a significant shift away from the detention of vulnerable people. The Governmentmust do much more to ensure that its policy and practice address the pressing concerns highlighted in the Shaw Review.
The debate is an opportunity to hold the Government to its promises.
