The unnecessary detention of asylum seekers on the Detained Fast Track
On the Detained Fast Track asylum process, people are detained simply for claiming asylum from persecution. They are held in Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs), yet they are not detained for removal. They lose their liberty solely for the administrative convenience of the UK Border Agency (UKBA). Detaining people for claiming asylum is incompatible with the spirit of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
