Last night, Michael from the Freed Voices group, delivered a speech as part of a special event on migration at SOAS University, organized by Entitled Magazine and SOAS Solidarity with Refugees and Displaced People Society.
After being introduced as a long-time member of the Freed Voices group, who have between them lost over 30 years of their lives to detention in the UK, Michael took to the mic to reflect on what it means to grow up in East London, eat pie and mash, support Chelsea, go to a British school, then find yourself locked up in immigration detention. He spoke at length about the realities of the two and half years he spent detained, the impact it had on him and his community, and why it’s high time for a time limit.
